What do I do? How do I join Age of Aquarius? What happens when I attend a game? What the hell is this all about? I have many questions….
To begin with, Age of Aquarius is a role playing game. As the name indicates, role playing means that the participants play roles. Age of Aquarius is a game where the participants, or players, control fictional characters in a make believe world. The players act like actors in a radio theatre, albeit a very large one with about 30 other actors present. But roleplaying is not theatre. The participants tell the story together. They walk around and talk to each other, and to a limited extent they do simple things their characters would do, but nothing that requires a stunt man.
There is a GameMaster, an adjudicator, who can help decide what happens when it can’t be simply resolved by the actors. The players, like actors, try to identify with their roles and try to act and speak like their characters.
Yet there is no script. It’s entirely improvisational, with the player deciding what to say and do, and there is no writer telling them what their character should do and say. There is no extreme pressure to perform; that detracts from the fun. And enjoying yourself is the aim of playing the game.
All relevant facts about the characters are described on a piece of paper that each player has. This is a pre printed form which is called a Character Sheet. If a player wants to know something about a character, eg: is she fluent in French? - all that is needed is a glance at the character sheet. Before the game session, all players will create (or have created for them) a character. The GameMaster has no character of his own. Instead he controls some of the people that are not being portrayed by other players but may happen by in the course of the story – kind of like the part actors who have only a few lines in a film play – these are called Non Player Characters (NPC’s). These characters are seldom important. Though this is a game, there are no winners or losers in a role playing game. The players usually feel good if their characters achieve their goals. But even if they fail, no one really loses. The players have still gone through the adventure and experienced suspense, excitement and friendship. One of the ideas of Age of Aquarius is that characters should change when confronted with different things. Some may become hurt, healed, or even more determined. Whatever happens should be further incentive to adventure and play the game. The player characters are the heroes, and sometimes villains, of the game. Their adventures are the story of Age of Aquarius. The character you portray should fit into the world of Age of Aquarius, so that you have a role that you will enjoy.
