Science level guide:
1: You know the very basics.
2: The basics are beginning to make some sense. You know some of the terminology,
and some of the history of the science.
3: The basics have crystallised into something much bigger. Things don’t
seem so simple anymore. But you know more than you ever have known before and
you still want to learn.
4: Basic ideas flow together to lay the groundwork for much more complicated
ideas. You are familiar with the glyphs and symbols of this science.
5: Your knowledge of what is going in the field starts to make much more sense.
You are not yet an expert. You know all that is necessary to know, but you still
have not made your mark.
6: You have a pet theory that you want to test. And you are beginning to be
known as a specialist on this area.
7: You are delving deeper within what is obviously your specialisation. The
researches your are doing are important and other experts in your field look
forward to what you publish.
8: You are a well-known specialist in this field. People in the science know
of you and respect your work. Some of your work is even considered genuinely
groundbreaking.
9: People in other scientific disciplines and branches come to you to see if
some of your ideas can be used in their own fields. You are one of the top scientists,
and people will rely on your work for years to come.
10: You are a household name. You know everything there is to know about your
subject, and are know beginning to wonder if there are things that cannot known,
and how to go about discovering them.
Science –
Science is different to knowledge because it uses a more systematic approach,
involving trial and error as well as experimentation. Science also uses a systematic
method of learning.
At low levels science can be general in knowledge, but at combined level of
5 and above it must involve a specialisation – a branch of science at
which you are devoted to must be chosen.
Astronomy: you know or can find out which stars and planets
are overhead at a particular day or hour of day or night, when eclipses and
meteor showers occur, and the names of important stars. You might be able to
calculate orbits, discuss stellar life cycles, or have a specialty such as radio
astronomy.
Biology: this is the science of life, including botany, cytology,
ecology, genetics, microbiology, physiology, zoology, and so on. With this skill
one might for instance develop a vaccine against some virulent bacterium, or
isolate the hallucinogenic properties of a rare plant.
Computer Science: this skill is the design of computer hardware,
software and networking.
Chemistry: this is the study of the composition of substances,
the effects of temperature, energy, and pressure upon them, and how they affect
one another. With Chemistry, you might create or extract complex chemical compounds,
including simple explosives, poisons, gases, and acids, requiring at least a
day or so with the proper equipment and chemicals. You could also analyse an
unknown substance, given proper equipment and reagents.
Geology: this ability enables you to tell the approximate age
of a rock stratum, recognize fossil types, distinguish many minerals and crystals,
locate promising sites for drilling, evaluate soils, and anticipate volcanism,
seismic events, avalanches, and other such phenomena.
Maths: This is the foundation for all theoretical research,
in almost all areas of scientific endeavour. You can understand complex numerical
relationships and the base principles of computation. This knowledge extends
to geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
Physics: this skill grants theoretical understanding of pressure,
materials, motion, magnetism, electricity, optics, radioactivity and related
phenomena, and some ability to construct experimental devices to test ideas.
Psychology: you understand the principles of human personality
and cognition, as well as having knowledge of the dynamics of social systems
and their relationship to individuals. You can develop this skill to incorporate
brainwashing and propaganda.
Medicine: this is foremost the physical ability to treat minor
wounds or provide relief and healing for injuries and common sicknesses. Not
all diseases can be healed through application of this skill, nor can all poisons
be reversed, but it gives the user a chance to determine what poison or sickness
affects the recipient, and counteract it. As your skill level increases you
change from first aid to medical practice to surgery to medical research. These
are not specialisations; rather they are indications of competency.
First Aid – you know how to treat shock, set
broken bones, rouse the unconscious, etc.
Medical practice - you can treat wounds that require time to heal,
deliver babies, and diagnose and treat diseases and poisoning. Using the entire
contents of your medical bag, you may save the life of someone who would otherwise
perish.
Surgery – you may get inside your patients with a reasonable
chance of them surviving. You can remove foreign objects, organs or growths,
or attempt transplants or grafts.
Medical Research - Once your body of medical knowledge is so great
you can choose a specialisation, which gives you a much better chance of successful
diagnosis or research into one particular field. Examples include cardiology,
neurology, interplanetary diseases, war wounds, gynaecology and so on.
Scrutinise
Using the Scrutinise skill you can closely search an area to find a concealed
item, a person hiding, a secret passage or entrance, or even a hidden compartment.
Scrutinise often involves handling an object, to examine closely and notice
hidden details.
Sensuality
The ability to perform and participate in intimate relationships is important.
This skill is not simply having sex. It is also flirting and seduction. Sensuality
can be used over an extended period of time to turn an acquaintance into a friend,
or to turn friendship into romance. It is equally useful for spending a good
time carousing and enjoying yourself.
Sports
This is the ability to play well with others in a team or individual sporting
event with specialised rules.
Stealth
You may attempt to move undetected past those who would spot you, as you try
to sneak. This skill must be rolled when you want to move silently and in concealment,
or in shadows, or have to hide at very short notice. The actual conditions at
the time will modify the chance of success. It cannot be used if under observation,
but even a moment’s distraction will allow you to attempt a stealth skill
use (with a penalty).
Streetwise
Sometimes you will want to spend time in assorted dives and hang-outs to pick
up important rumours, as these are the places where they are most circulated.
It is possible to try and use the "word on the street" to find out
the location of a person - especially if they are wanted by the authorities
or likely to have been in contact with the less savoury element of the local
population. Through this skill you can learn about “who’s who”
in the local criminal underworld, and what current events have been “going
down”.
Style
This is the skill of learning to fit in. You know the proper moment to chit
chat, to talk about things that interest the person you are talking to, and
even to be quiet at the right moment. Amongst the style-conscious, the way that
you dress and behave may make the difference between success and ridicule. Careful
use of words and body language to make someone feel better about themselves
can be used to improve their impression of you. This is the skill of knowing
what to say and how to say it. A character with style can reverse mistakes in
front of the wrong people by successful use of this skill.
Survival
This is the ability to survive outside the confines of a supporting civilisation.
This skill also applies to the homeless and other street people, who are likewise
without civilisations support. With this skill you know how to gather food,
find or construct shelter, and orienteer and navigate in the outdoors. In the
urban environment this skill represents scavenging for clothing and food, knowing
when and where to find a free meal, how to stay warm in the winter, knowing
where it's safe to sleep, and so forth.
Toughness
This is essentially the skill to keep going when anybody else would give up.
When you are hurt, it is this skill you use to keep acting despite your wounds
and to avoid shock and unconsciousness. This skill is also mental fortitude,
a measure of your staying power at a task despite weariness. With toughness
you can keep calm and stay friendly when dealing with difficult people.
Trance
Using this skill of mental relaxation and focus, you enter a trance that allows
you to achieve a clear lucid mind, which is helpful for relaxation, heightened
awareness, and the path to spiritual enlightenment. You can achieve this altered
state of consciousness without external stimuli.
Vehicle
(Drive) –
The skill is used for all vehicles, whether cars, trucks or bikes. As well as
normal travel, the skill is used to cover evasive manoeuvres, "trick"
manoeuvres and so on. When you choose this skill, you must immediately choose
a specialisation category. You can choose more than one category, but must develop
each specialisation separately.
The categories are – Car (includes trucks), Bicycle, Motorcycle, Sailboat,
Powerboat, Ship handling, Aeroplane, Helicopter
Weapon
–
All weapons are covered by this skill. When you choose this skill, you must
immediately choose a specialisation category. You can choose more than one category,
but must develop each specialisation separately. Note that this is only skill
at hitting people with the weapon. Special manoeuvres are covered elsewhere.
The weapon categories –
Melee: these are all weapons that you use at close quarters,
such as knives, hatchets, whips, sword-canes swords, axes, flaming torches etc.
Low calibre gun: these are projectile weapons, such as the
.22 automatic or .25 Derringer.
Thrown: the skill used to take advantage of throwing knives,
stars, darts and other thrown weaponry.
Heavy calibre gun: these are big projectile weapons, usually
requiring two hands, such as rifles, shotguns and crossbows.
Archery: the bow and arrow
Martial Arts: you use your self as a weapon, practising a martial
art tradition.
Unique: if its not covered by a skill above, then it uses this
skill.

Wealth:
This ability is a measure of your living standard, a measurement of your economic
and social situation. This skill circumvents you needing to describe in detail
exactly everything you own. You can note things that you carry on your person
right now, and use this skill to have or acquire other things, as you need them.
Each level describes your monthly income, after tax has been paid. To maintain
this level of ability usually you must maintain a job that pays this. The net
available each month is how much you have left after all your bills are paid.
Savings is how much you have in the bank, and credit is how much you could borrow
safely. Home indicates the type of property you live in. Please note that this
is not an accurate reflection of Australia’s standards, with the levels
being decided on to suit a game purpose.
